exploring connections between mythology and astronomy

Welcome to The House Of The Sky, a loosely associated collection of words and art work which map out the mythopsychological relationships between astronomy and human beliefs from ancient times to the present day and beyond. In essence, this section of the site explores the mythopsychological effects of heavenly movements on human consciousness. It is my contention that the movements of the sky have been a major inspiration to human cultures, particularly on the mythological and symbolic levels for thousands of years, and I generally follow the theory of Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechend given in their book 'Hamlet's Mill - An Essay investigating the origins of Human Knowledge and its transmission through Myth' that people have known about the precession of the poles for longer than is generally accepted by the majority of academics, and that the effect of this precession on the movements of the sky is at the heart of myths and tales of floods and of World Ages.

This idea, developed further in an Andean context by William Sullivan in his work 'The Secrets of the Incas', is an important one because of the implications it brings to the modern world regarding our history, and indeed our future. The House Of The Sky throws into sharp relief the notions of religious literalism and our modern inability to understand myth as our ancestors intended it to be - as a repository which encoded a range of inner and outer wisdoms, disguised as stories which worked as metaphorical mnemonics. When the various technical languages found in mythology are understood, ancient mandalas and new vistas of experience are revealed. The House Of the Sky is one such mandala...
